Rajasthan Motorcycle Tour — The Ultimate Rider's Guide by Stoneheadbikes

Rajasthan Motorcycle Tour — The Ultimate Rider's Guide by Stoneheadbikes

There is no road trip in India quite like Rajasthan on a motorcycle.

Forts rising out of desert sand. Blue cities, pink cities, golden cities. Camel caravans at dusk, lakeside palaces at dawn, and highways that stretch so wide and flat you could ride forever. Rajasthan doesn't just offer scenery — it offers a feeling. And that feeling is best experienced at 80 kmph with the wind in your helmet and a Royal Enfield rumbling beneath you.

At Stoneheadbikes, we've been running Rajasthan motorcycle tours from Delhi for over 15 years. This is everything you need to know before you go.

Why Ride Rajasthan?

Most travellers see Rajasthan from inside a bus or a taxi. They rush through Jaipur, stop for an hour in Jodhpur, and miss everything in between. On a motorcycle, you move differently. You stop when something catches your eye. You take the smaller road. You arrive at a haveli in Mandawa covered in dust and completely alive.

Rajasthan rewards riders because:

  • The highways are long, smooth, and wide — built for distance
  • Every town has a fort, a palace, or a story worth stopping for
  • The winter riding season (October to March) offers near-perfect weather — warm days, cool mornings, zero rain
  • The culture is thick enough to taste — from camel fairs in Pushkar to desert sunsets in Jaisalmer
  • The food at roadside dhabas is some of the best you'll eat in your life

The Classic Rajasthan Motorcycle Route from Delhi

The most recommended motorcycle circuit for touring Rajasthan follows a well-planned loop that allows riders to experience both historic cities and desert terrain without unnecessary backtracking. The journey typically begins in Delhi and moves into Rajasthan via Mandawa, introducing riders to traditional havelis and quiet countryside roads. The route continues through Bikaner and Jaisalmer, where riders experience the heart of the Thar Desert. Tripatini

Here's the Stoneheadbikes recommended itinerary:

Day 1 — Delhi to Mandawa (260 km)

Leave the chaos of Delhi behind and ride northwest into the Shekhawati region. The roads open up quickly once you cross the Delhi-Rajasthan border. The landscapes become more open and semi-arid, punctuated by traditional villages. Mandawa is famous for its ornately painted havelis — merchant mansions covered floor to ceiling in frescoes. Check in to a heritage haveli guesthouse and walk the narrow lanes at sunset. A perfect first night. Planet Ride

Distance: ~260 km | Road quality: Good NH + state highway

Day 2 — Mandawa to Bikaner (180 km)

A relaxed morning ride through the Shekhawati countryside before hitting Bikaner — the camel country of Rajasthan. Visit the imposing Junagarh Fort (one of the few Rajasthan forts never conquered), sample the famous Bikaner namkeen, and spend the evening exploring the old city. The roads here are mostly smooth with stretches of open desert on either side.

Distance: ~180 km | Road quality: Excellent

Day 3 — Bikaner to Jaisalmer (330 km)

The big desert day. This is the stretch every rider talks about. You leave Bikaner and within an hour you're deep in the Thar — sand dunes on both sides, golden light, and almost no traffic. Jaisalmer's sandstone forts and the heart of the Thar Desert make it the defining stage of the Rajasthan bike trip. Ride into Jaisalmer as the sun sets and the Golden Fort glows amber — one of the great arrival moments in Indian touring. Spend two nights here.

Distance: ~330 km | Road quality: Very good — flat desert highway

Day 4 — Jaisalmer (Rest & Explore)

This is your day to breathe. Walk through the living fort (people actually live inside), take a sunset camel ride into the Sam Sand Dunes, and eat dinner under the stars at a desert camp. If you're feeling restless, a morning ride to Kuldhara — the abandoned ghost village — is only 20 km away and deeply atmospheric.

Riding: Optional short loops | Rest day

Day 5 — Jaisalmer to Jodhpur (285 km)

Leave the golden city and ride east toward the Blue City. The highway is excellent and the landscape slowly shifts from pure desert to scrubland. You ride through Jodhpur's old town by motorcycle, passing through its narrow lanes dominated by Mehrangarh Fort — remarkably well preserved, with an expansive view over the Blue City. Mehrangarh is arguably the most dramatic fort in all of Rajasthan. Do not rush this stop.

Distance: ~285 km | Road quality: Excellent NH

Day 6 — Jodhpur to Pushkar (190 km)

Ride through the scrub desert of central Rajasthan toward Pushkar — one of India's holiest towns, built around a sacred lake. The route passes through Pali and Sojat, away from tourist traffic. Pushkar is small, colourful, and best explored on foot. The Bullet Baba Temple is a key highlight along this stretch — its unusual history draws riders from across the country.

Distance: ~190 km | Road quality: Good

Day 7 — Pushkar to Jaipur (145 km)

A short riding day with a big arrival. Cross the Aravalli hills on winding ghat roads before descending into the Pink City. On the final approach, you ride at the foot of the imposing Amber Fort and enter Jaipur on a route that is only fully accessible on two wheels. Spend the evening in the old city — Hawa Mahal, Johari Bazaar, and the best lassi you've ever had.

Distance: ~145 km | Road quality: Good with ghat section

Day 8 — Jaipur to Udaipur (395 km) or split over two days

The longest leg of the tour, but one of the most rewarding. The highway south through Ajmer and Chittorgarh passes the ruins of the great Chittorgarh Fort — worth a two-hour stop. There is no other city in Rajasthan like Udaipur. It has a timeless romance that is reflected in the shimmering lakes and regal palaces — lose yourself in the intricate architecture of City Palace and explore the vibrant markets. End the day with a sunset boat cruise on Lake Pichola.

Distance: ~395 km | Best split via Chittorgarh overnight

Day 9 — Udaipur to Jaipur / Return to Delhi

Depending on your schedule, either ride back to Jaipur (395 km) and catch a train or flight home, or continue north through Ajmer and Alwar for a scenic loop back to Delhi (580 km over two days).

Best Bikes for a Rajasthan Tour

Not every bike is made for Rajasthan's mix of highway, desert track, and city lane. At Stoneheadbikes, we recommend:

Royal Enfield Classic 350 / Meteor 350 The quintessential Rajasthan machine. Comfortable, torquey, and looks absolutely right parked in front of a fort. Perfect for cruising long desert highways.

Royal Enfield Himalayan If your route includes any off-road stretches — sand dunes near Jaisalmer, village tracks in Shekhawati — the Himalayan is unmatched. Upright ergonomics reduce fatigue on long days.

Hero Xpulse 200 BS6 The budget-friendly adventure choice. Lighter than a Royal Enfield, excellent fuel economy, and its long-travel suspension handles Rajasthan's varied roads with ease. Great for solo riders who want to go off the beaten track.

KTM Duke 390 For riders who want performance on the open highways. Fast, comfortable, and handles beautifully. Best suited to riders with experience on powerful machines.
